Differences Don't Mean Disrespect
By Richie Suttles
Differences happen all the time. Be it among family, friends, co-workers, creators, the list goes on and on but it definitely happens a lot. The SCREAM Community is no different. Most fans have differences on favorite killers, characters, theories, and so forth but the biggest differences among fans have been the fate of Kirby Reed in SCREAM 4. This has caused quite a stir among SCREAM fans.
The debate really heated up when those that listened to the commentary of SCREAM 4 during the scene where Charlie stabs Kirby this exchange between Wes Craven and Hayden Panettiere happened:
Wes Craven: "As you can see, Hayden was still moving."
Hayden Panettiere: "Still moving..."
Wes Craven: "Not saying she's coming back for sure."
Then to add fuel to the fire among fans Craven answered a fan who asked about Kirby on Twitter with this:
Wes Craven advocating Kirby's return. |
Fast forward over ten years later and we find out Kevin Williamson’s original intentions were not to have Kirby survive at all. When Charlie stabs Kirby in SCREAM 4 his intentions were for her to die all along. There were no plans to have her in future installments of SCREAM. There is a clear difference to what Williamson had planned and from what Craven had said. Was Craven leaving fans in suspense? He was definitely the master of it.
This brings us to SCREAM 2022. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, Chad Villella, James Vanderbilt, Guy Busick gives us this easter egg within the film...
Interview with Woodsboro Survivor Kirby Reed! |
Notice what it says at the top of the videos? “Interview with Woodsboro Survivor Kirby Reed!” Could this be a tease of things to come or something else? For some fans it confirms that she is alive and well. I guess time will tell or maybe more fuel will be added to the debate on the fate of Kirby. We will have to wait and see.
Now while it would be easy to chime in on the debate that is not the reason for this article. The reason was that amongst some there seems to be a division among Kevin Williamson fans and Wes Craven fans over the differences in SCREAM. Some have gone so far as to say Wes or Kevin wouldn’t do it this way. I think we can all agree in saying they saw things a bit differently. You can see the creative differences over Kirby. Williamson saw it one way while Craven saw it another. That’s perfectly fine and normal. However, they both respected one another. SCREAM wouldn’t be what it is today without the contributions of both Willaimson and Craven as well as many others. So, as we have our differences within the SCREAM Community, remember, we can still respect one another despite those differences. I leave you passionate SCREAM fans with two videos of just how much Wes Craven meant to Kevin Williamson and the new crew of SCREAM.
If they can have that same respect to each other creating this franchise then why can’t we as SCREAM fans have the same respect for one another?
