Scream Blu-Ray Boxset: An Inside Story

By Lito Velasco, Associate Producer/Music Supervisor, Scream: The Inside Story

Well, here we are almost five months exactly after the first airing of Scream: The Inside Story…and the impending debut of the film on DVD in the new Scream Trilogy BluRay boxed set is just around the corner.

First off, I can’t believe the release is nearly upon us, let alone the fact that I was lucky enough to be asked to participate in the making of the film. I realize I sound like a broken record when I say schmaltzy stuff like that, but…with Scream: The Inside Story- like Never Sleep Again -I was able to be a part of something really special that will be around forever and is considered to be one of the ultimate tributes to and retrospectives of a classic horror franchise that not only impacted pop culture and cinema, but fans like me around the world. And with Scream: The Inside Story being included in the new boxed set, our tribute is now an “official” part of the Scream saga.

Not that I didn’t consider our show to be “official” before the inclusion, mind you.

Bear with me as I rewind to five months ago: our first airing on the BIO Channel took place on a Wednesday night. During the premiere, director Dan Farrands, producer/writer Thommy Hutson and I took part in an online chat with fans as they watched the show. It was thrilling to not only read such positive reaction from the diehard fans but also to receive as many phone calls, texts, and emails as I did when the documentary ended.

In the following weeks, reviews from critics, websites, fans, and devotees started popping up online: the show was generally regarded as one of the best Inside Story programs to ever air on BIO. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t ecstatic with the reception and reaction. When you work for so long and as hard as every member of our crew did on a show like this, you do it not only because you love the work and subject matter, but because you want to give something back to the fans like you…like me. I’ve said in other interviews and writings that Scream, like Halloween before it, helped to shape my life and future. It gave me so much…and it was an honor to “give something back”.

Fast forward now to a little over a month ago…when I first found out that our show was being included on the new boxed set and would always be a part of the official Scream “lore”. Again…I won’t even try to pretend I wasn’t bouncing off the walls. I was more than elated; I was overcome with joy and a sense of humility and honor. And with the release just three days away…those emotions and feelings have been building to what I am sure will be a ridiculous height once I finally get my hands on a copy of the disc.

I’m going to have to wrap this up because I need to get back to work on More Brains…the definitive documentary to the Dan O’Bannon classic, Return of the Living Dead.

Come on, now…you had to see a plug coming; I live and work in Hollywood!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it yet again: I realize how absolutely lucky a person I am. I made it to this town, I’ve been able to pursue my dreams, and for whatever reason…I was chosen to be included in very special groups that have been able to focus their love for their favorite horror franchises into projects that are, quite simply, the greatest love letters I can possibly imagine ever crafting.

Thanks to the fans like me, thanks to the people who helped me get here, and thanks to Wes Craven and the cast and crew of one of my favorite horror films ever: Scream. I hope everyone enjoys the BluRays as much as I know I will! Be sure to silence your cell phone while watching…’cause you never know who may be on the other end of the line!
